1. Make your home a place of peace and rest by removing distractions and unnecessary noise
Noise is one of the most common distractions in our lives. It can come from many sources, including television, smartphones, computers, and even unwholesome and negative conversations. While some noise is necessary and even beneficial, too much noise can be a source of stress and distraction.
The Bible tells us to "be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:11). This means that we need to take time to rest and focus on God. When our homes are filled with distractions, it becomes increasingly difficult to do this.
There are many ways to remove distractions and create a more peaceful home. One way is to turn off electronics. You can also designate specific times for peace and rest, such as bedtime, reading times, or mealtimes.
2. Set aside time each day for Bible reading and prayer
One of the best ways to ensure that you're spending time in God's Word regularly is to set aside time each day specifically for Bible reading and prayer. While there's no rule on how long this should take, carving out even just 15-20 minutes each day can make a huge difference.
If you're struggling to find time in your busy schedule, try waking up a little earlier in the morning or going to bed a little bit later at night. The best time to spend time with God is in the morning when your energy isn't drained.
“Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You.”
Dedicating even a small chunk of time to morning devotions can help you as a Christian homemaker stay connected with God throughout the day. When you begin your day with God, you are more inclined to start it with peace, joy, and prayerful surrender. As you grow in your relationship with Christ, you'll likely find that these habits become more and more natural (and enjoyable)! Your kids will also learn from your example and will most likely want to join you, too!
3. Display art that reminds you of God's love and provision
Another way to keep Christ as the center of your home is to incorporate Biblical or sacred images or quotes into your home decor. For example, you could display a Bible verse in a frame and hang it on the wall. You could hang a canvas of your family's favorite hymn by your fireplace. Displaying simple reminders of God's love and provision will help you and your family stay focused on Him throughout the day.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by using Christian art in our homes. Christian art can be a beautiful way to remind us of Scripture, and it can also provide inspiration and hope during difficult times. If you're not sure where to start, I suggest checking out the Christian Art section on Etsy. There you'll find a variety of prints, paintings, and artwork that are both beautiful and affordable!
4. Read, learn and memorize Scripture together as a family
One of the best ways to have a Christ-centered home is to read, learn and memorize Scripture together. Not only is this a great way to spend time together as a family, but it also helps embed God's Word in your hearts. There are many different Bible verse memorization programs available, or you can simply use an online search to find verses that speak to your family's needs. Choose a few short verses and work on committing them to memory over the course of a month or two. You'll be amazed at how much closer you'll feel to each other – and to God – when you know His Word by heart.
Deuteronomy 11:9 says, "You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."
By teaching Scripture to toddlers, babies, or school-aged children, we are empowering them to experience childhood with God as their Guide and Companion. Filling our children’s minds with God’s Promises will help them draw from Bible lessons and promises as they navigate life.
5. Play and sing Christ-centered music as a family
One powerful and effective way to make Christ the center of your home is by filling it with music that points to Him. There are countless hymns and Scripture songs that remind us of God's love for us. Check out our free Sacred Music Tracks for songs your family can sing throughout the day. Playing sacred songs regularly will help keep your family focused on God's everlasting promises.
"He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord." – Psalm 40:3
Listening to Scripture songs is one of the simplest methods to learn and commit Scripture to heart.
6. Spend time in nature
Another way to create a Christ-centered home is by spending time in nature together. Take walks, go on hikes, plant a garden – anything that gets you and your family outside in God's creation. As you experience the beauty of His handiwork, take a moment to really look around and appreciate God's goodness and provision.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork." – Psalm 19:1
“God has surrounded us with nature’s beautiful scenery to attract and interest the mind. It is His design that we should associate the glories of nature with His character. If we faithfully study the book of nature, we shall find it a fruitful source for contemplating the infinite love and power of God.”
